Our history

In 1867, Cafe Ritter first opened its doors in Prince Esterhazy’s former summer palace in Mariahilf. Around 20 years later, it moved to its current location, the corner building at the junction of Schadekgasse and Amerlingstraße.

This old-Viennese café in the 6th district is regarded as one of the most traditional establishments on the Viennese coffee house scene. Take your time and enjoy the stylish and cosy atmosphere!

The ‘Ritter’, as it is known for short, is the last remaining large coffee house on the popular shopping street, Mariahilfer Straße, where numerous cafés once stood.

Well-known Austrian artists and writers such as Friedrich Adler, Ludwig Anzengruber, Peter Rosegger, Rudolf von Alt and Gerd Jonke were among the regulars at this popular, long-established Viennese venue.

The interior is considered legendary; it was presumably created during the interwar period by Josef Zotti, a pupil of the famous architect Josef Hoffmann. Also noteworthy are the preserved Neo-Rococo stucco ceilings, the elegant wood panelling and stylistic elements from the 1950s, which lend the high-ceilinged rooms an elegant touch.

Cafe Ritter has everything that defines a typical Viennese coffee house.

Enjoy a taste of tradition!
